Recession-Proof: Private Campgrounds

Low-cost, family-friendly private campgrounds, most of which are small businesses, are doing well despite the travel slump

Here is a great article by Karen Klien at Business Week, that shows private campgrounds around the country are doing well in these down economic times. I do not have to tell you that a camping vacation can save you ton of money vs. the drive/fly, hotel vacation. An interesting fact stated in the article, is that there are over 8000 private campground operators in the country with half independently owned by multi-generation families.

Another fact listed is that many of the private campgrounds are adding or improving existing amenities. Most of the higher-end campgrounds now have pools, cable T.V. and Wi-Fi.

I really like the more natural settings of the State Park and National Forrest type campgrounds. I am always on the lookout for a private campground that provides a balance between amenities and a natural park like setting. If any of my readers would like to list their favorite private campgrounds please list them in the comment section below.

  1. One of my favorites is Jalama Beach Campground -- between Santa Barbara & Lompoc, on a secluded large cove w/ cliffs, surrounded by private ranch lands. http://www.jalamabeach.com
